Buffalo, or bison, will directly confront storms. “A bison will turn into a snow storm rather than drifting with the wind because they instinctively know that walking into the storm will get them out of the weather quicker.” Note it does not negate the effects of the storm, but it simply allows dealing with the storm in a more proactive manner.
We need to be more like the buffalo when it comes to the storms in our lives. We all have them. No life is storm free. The severity of the storms may vary, but there are storms.
It would be nice to have a Doppler Radar system for life. Something to alert us to possible stormy weather. Unfortunately, I don’t believe it exists.
Understanding that storms are inevitable, what might we do to face them?
Walk with a herd. Knowing you’re not alone provides strength when things get blustery
See beyond the storm. Fix your mind firmly on what is on the other side. Remind yourself that this too will pass
Resist blame. Often when we are in a troubling situation we look to blame it on someone. It doesn’t work. Blame in the storm does not lessen it. It only makes the storm more unbearable
Sometimes you have to stop walking and wait. The waiting allows for recalibration while the storm rages
Look for what the storm produced in your life. Resilience? Increased confidence? Experience? Inner strength?
The Apostle Paul provides four very practical helps when facing into the storm: “Be on your guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13).
It is my experience that storms we walk toward form our character. The storms we avoid lessen our resolve.
